Borders, a subsidiary of the Al Maya Group, established its first store in 2006 and has since evolved into a leading regional lifestyle brand, operating over 25 stores across the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman. Beyond its core offering as a bookstore, Borders provides a thoughtfully curated range of books, hobbies, gifts, educational resources, and lifestyle products, aimed at fostering learning, creativity, and discovery.

Our History

Borders began in 1971 when two brothers, Tom and Louis Borders, opened a small 800-square-foot bookstore in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It quickly became a favourite neighbourhood spot where students, families and book lovers would gather, discover new stories and feel at home. As the little store grew in popularity, the brothers opened more locations across Michigan and later in Indianapolis and Atlanta — each one carrying the same welcoming spirit as the original. In 1988, Robert DiRomualdo joined the company and helped Borders expand even further. Within a few years, the brand became one of the most recognised and trusted book retailers in the U.S. The Borders brothers eventually passed the business on in 1992, allowing the brand to grow under a larger retail family. Today, Borders UAE continues that legacy — creating spaces that inspire curiosity, celebrate creativity and bring communities together through the love of reading.

Achievements

Over the years, Borders has had the privilege of hosting a wide range of renowned authors and influential voices. International names such as John Gray (Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus), Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup series) and Doug Lipp (Disney U) have visited our stores. From the region, we’ve welcomed leaders like Mr. Khalaf Al Habtoor, respected political figures including Dr. Shashi Tharoor, and distinguished personalities from the Indian Army such as General J.J. Singh, whose book launch was attended by the Indian Ambassador in Dubai. Borders has also been recognized by the Dubai Government with acknowledgements and certificates of appreciation for our participation in community events. We are proud supporters of meaningful initiatives, including Breast Cancer Arabia, and we regularly partner with GEMS schools across Dubai to bring book fairs and reading experiences to students.
